My name is Thomas O'Connor. I live in the Republic of Ireland. Originally from Dublin, I now live in Cavan.
I am a counsellor/psychotherapist and, although I deal with most mental health issues, I do have particular added training in all areas of Addiction and their attaching issues.
I did most of my accreditation work with a well-known Suicide-prevention group called SOSAD (Save Our Sons And Daughters). This Charity was formed by people who lost children through suicide. Most of my training here has taught me to deal with Trauma, Loss, Bereavement, Panic, Anxiety, Stress and of course Depression. It was a very challenging placement but on reflection, it is probably the best training I could have had. To meet a family who has just lost a child is an "eye-opener" - especially when that child has chosen his/her own fate.
I am, by nature a very easy-going and approachable person. I use various therapies and believe that no one suit fits all. I believe also that therapy is changing all the time and new therapies are being introduced.
In relation to Addictions, I became interested in this area through my own addiction and recovery. I basically lost everything, my marriage, my job, my home and almost my life. This took me to studying addictions in Trinity College Dublin. Since then I have worked in a counselling role in residential settings, on a one-to-one basis, in group settings, in addition to having worked with the North Eastern Region Drug and Alcohol Task Force on a research project.
So in a nutshell, I am not fixed on any one style of counselling, REBT, CBT and Harm-reduction methods are what I use mainly. Whereas I have worked with almost as many "issues" as "clients", I have my personal life experience to draw on in issues around addiction and, as mentioned, much of my placement work was in the area of suicide, bereavement, and loss.
I have also worked with issues such as relationship breakdown, sexual identity problems, bullying, borderline personality disorders, narcissism, sociopathy, psychopathy, self-esteem, dual-diagnosis, relaxation techniques, sleep disorder, and mindfulness. As I said, almost as many "issues as clients".
I would be delighted to hear from you and work with you in resolving whatever issues might be troubling you.
Thank you for taking the time to read my profile.
